Dalada exposition: PHIs urge reduced polythene/plastic use

18 Apr 2025 | BY Sumudu Chamara

In light of the exposition of the Tooth Relic at the Temple of the Tooth (Dalada Maligawa) in Kandy, the Public Health Inspectors’ Union (PHIU) has requested devotees to minimise the use of polythene and plastic and to dispose of waste at designated disposal sites.

The PHIU noted that under its direct supervision, a systematic waste management system has been established.

PHIU Secretary Chamil Muthukuda told The Daily Morning that in addition to the above, several other arrangements have been made to ensure the healthcare of devotees, and that these measures will be in effect from today (18) to 28 April. He noted that approximately 50 PHIs will be deployed each day during this period.

In a communiqué issued on the matter, the PHIU added that during this period, PHIs will inspect all designated food consumption areas in the City as well as dansal campaigns which they emphasised must be registered with the Kandy City health authorities. A 24-hour drinking water system has also been established with water being tested every hour. In addition, 150 mobile lavatories have been installed for the use of devotees.

The statement further noted that teams led by PHIs have been deployed to monitor several health-related aspects including the provision of food and the prevention of communicable diseases.
