Election Commission (EC) Chairman R.M.A.L. Rathnayake stated that the 2025 Local Government (LG) Elections will be held as planned on 6 May.

The commission has begun printing polling cards and ballot papers not affected by ongoing court cases concerning rejected nomination papers.

Accordingly, the Court of Appeal ordered Returning Officers to accept nearly 37 rejected nominations, while the Supreme Court dismissed 53 related petitions.

The distribution of polling cards will begin on 17 April and conclude on 29 April, with a special meeting scheduled next week to discuss election-related matters, including preventing the misuse of state resources.
