Wimal under fire

07 May 2023

Dissident Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Wimal Weerawansa has come under fire by activists of the Aragalaya people’s protests that were carried out last year.

Key activists in the Aragalaya movement have denied claims made by Weerawansa in his investigative book that was launched recently, which claims that the US Embassy in Colombo had backed the protest campaign.

Activist Dhanish Ali had claimed that Weerawansa was engaged in a different sort of ploy together with the Chinese Embassy in Colombo.

He had made this statement while addressing the media, referring to the allegations levelled against the protest campaign that characterised it as a conspiracy to create instability in the country backed by certain foreign missions, political parties, and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).

US Ambassador to Colombo Julie Chung denied claims made by Weerawansa in his book, where he had alleged that Chung had played a key role in backing the protesters and getting former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his Government ousted.
