• Alles slams MP Lalith Ellawala’s ignorance of underworld/drug activities 

In response to Opposition Parliamentarian Lalith Ellawala's statement that a no confidence motion (NCM) would be moved against the Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles if the latter cannot ensure a safe and secure environment within at least a month, Alles said that the former, himself has displayed his ignorance of underworld and drug related activities by making such a statement.

Ellawala, who was earlier a ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Government MP, but is now an Opposition MP representing the Freedom People's Congress led by MP Dullas Alahapperuma, had urged Alles to take the required measures to address the rising crime rate and to crack down on underworld activities. Charging that the Minister should resign if he is incapable of ensuring a safe and secure environment in the country within at least a month, Ellawala vowed to move a NCM against him (Alles), if he is unable to do so.

When contacted by The Daily Morning to inquire about the matter, Alles said that Ellawala's statement itself has proven the latter's ignorance of drug and underworld related activities. "Underworld and drug related activities cannot be brought to an end within a short period. If someone says that it can be done within a month, it displays nothing but that person's ignorance. Ellawala has made this statement without any knowledge on the seriousness of this matter."

With the country seeing a considerable increase in crimes including shootings in the recent past, many parties have urged the Police and the other relevant agencies to curb such and enforce the law against the perpetrators. Commenting on the matter to The Daily Morning, Alles said that the Police is doing all it could to prevent crimes. "The Police has to launch operations, apprehend culprits, and knock-off underworld activities as much as possible in order to prevent crimes. All those measures are being taken continuously."
