- Travel YouTuber Nadun Tennakoon on his latest adventure
Nadun Tennakoon, a travel YouTuber with over 9,000 subscribers, is known for his unique and offbeat travel experiences. He is someone who has explored every nook and cranny of Sri Lanka and has made a career out of it. In one of his latest videos, Nadun takes us on a journey to the Akunu Hela mountain, which is located in the eastern part of the country. In this interview, we catch up with Nadun to learn more about his experience.
The adventure began early in the morning when Nadun and a lecturer from Uva Wellassa University, Duranga Senanayake, headed towards Bibile town. They made a pit stop for breakfast and purchased lunch packets for the journey ahead. The mountain they were about to climb is located in Helakomana and is called Akunu Hela. Nadun explained that the mountain is known for frequent lightning strikes, making it an unusual climb. Additionally, it is where the Uva Province meets the Eastern Province, and there is a red flag to indicate the border, but it was missing on their climb.
What makes this climb unique is that only ten people have successfully climbed it so far, as per the villagers in the area. As a result, there was no clear path, and the group asked two villagers to accompany them as guides. The villagers also helped clear a path as the trees had overgrown the old path. “The villagers in the area were incredibly hospitable, and we were lucky to have them accompany us as guides. Without them, the climb would have been even more challenging,” he added. Nadun recounted how they were warned that the mountain was frequented by elephants, and they encountered a few walking around during their climb.
The climb took around three hours, and during the rainy season, a stream runs through the mountain, adding to its beauty. It’s also a great place to camp, and the mist that envelops the mountain during rain makes it a magical place to be.
“The view from the top of the mountain was breathtaking, and the mist that enveloped the mountain during the rain made it feel like a mystical place,” he said. However, Nadun warned that the top of the mountain is cold, so adequate clothing must be taken. Moreover, wild boars frequent the area, and they had a close encounter with them during the climb, which could have been dangerous. Thus, it’s essential to take necessary precautions when climbing Akunu Hela.
Nadun’s love for adventure and exploration comes across in the video he made on the climb, and he explains that it’s not about the destination but the journey. He goes on to say that Sri Lanka has many hidden gems, and it’s exciting to explore them. Nadun emphasised the need for responsible travel and not leaving behind any litter. He also encouraged others to travel off the beaten path and discover the natural beauty that Sri Lanka has to offer.
“The climb to Akunu Hela was one of the most unique experiences I’ve had so far. The fact that only a handful of people have been able to climb this mountain made it all the more special,” he told us.
