The Secretary to the Energy Ministry, K.T.M. Udayanda Hemapala stated that they – the ministry and the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) – expect to prepare the proposal for the electricity tariff revision after obtaining the opinions of the representatives of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as well.
The IMF representatives, currently on a visit to Sri Lanka, were scheduled to meet with officials from the ministry and the CEB for a discussion. Hemapala stated that the discussions were held yesterday (21) and expected to focus on the revision of electricity tariffs and the procedures of the relevant institutions.
Accordingly, the related proposal is expected to be submitted to the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) in the coming days.
On 24 October, the CEB had submitted a proposal to the PUCSL regarding the electricity tariff revision. Although the proposal suggested an overall reduction of 6.6% in electricity tariffs, the PUCSL had later informed that the tariff reduction was insufficient. Due to this, the PUCSL had informed the CEB to prepare a new proposal and resubmit it to the Commission.
