The Police investigations are yet to identify the culprits behind the recent attack on Jaffna-based journalist Pradeepan Thambithurai's house in Achchuveli.
Last week, a group of unidentified individuals had vandalised Thambithurai's house, set his motorbike on fire and damaged his three-wheeler. The estimated damage caused to his property was reported to be over Rs. 1 million.
When contacted by The Daily Morning yesterday (19), Police Media Spokesperson and Deputy Inspector General of Police Nihal Thalduwa, stated that several Police teams are investigating the recent attack on the home of Thambithurai. "The investigations are underway, but, they have not yet determined what happened or identified the suspects. There have been incidents of houses being attacked in Jaffna for various reasons. So, it is only after a thorough investigation that the cause of this incident can be found."
A group of assailants had arrived on motorbikes and proceeded to vandalise Thambithurai's property, and leaflets left at the scene carried a message concerning transgender representation. Police initiated an investigation, recovering fingerprints from a gas container involved in the arson and obtained closed circuit television camera footage of the attackers fleeing.
Several parties including Tamil National People's Front Parliamentarian Selvaraja Gajendran and the Jaffna Media Association President K. Selvakumar had condemned the attack and called the relevant authorities including the Police for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible.
