Law enforcement authorities are investigating food or chemical including gas toxicity as the cause of death following a British woman and a German woman dying after staying at a hostel in Kollupitiya, while another German national is still undergoing treatment at hospital.
Police are currently awaiting the post-mortem examination results in order to determine the cause of death.
“We don’t know if it is food that they have taken from the hostel or food that they have brought from outside the hostel or whether it was a chemical or gas that caused the fatalities,” the Police Media Spokesperson, Senior Superintendent of Police and attorney K. Buddhika Manathunga told The Daily Morning yesterday (4). “However, we will be investigating these possibilities.”
Meanwhile, the Police stated that they have been questioning the hostel management with regard to the incident.
“Following the publication of the post-mortem results, we will be taking legal action against the hotel management,” Kollupitiya Police Officer In Charge S. Dushmantha, told The Daily Morning yesterday. Dushmantha confirmed that there have been investigations from the Government Analyst’s Department and government medical officers.
