Vajira’s Chinese example

07 Jan 2024

United National Party (UNP) Chairman, Parliamentarian Vajira Abeywardena has recently stated that Sri Lanka should emulate China and should therefore adopt some of the clauses in the Chinese Constitution.

Abeywardena has said during a recent event that people should not be given the freedom of the wild ass for the sake of democracy and observed that Sri Lanka should also look at banning social media like in China.

“China is a world power and if we want to see a China (in our country), we then have to connect with the Chinese Constitution. I have read a bit of the Chinese Constitution. I haven’t read it in full. The Chinese Communist Party is powerful and there is no talk of democracy in the sense of the freedom of the wild ass. Applying some parts of the Chinese Constitution is not bad, it’s good,” Abeywardena has said.

He has further spoken of social media as well: “There are so many channels here today, none of them can use filth on their channels and if that happens, the channel will be shut down. But switch on the channels available on your phone. That has enough and more filth that you cannot watch with your family. Should that not be banned? It should be banned. Should we be scared because some people are opposed to it? No. It should be banned. Can it be called freedom? No, it is the freedom of the wild ass.”
