Sri Lanka's application to join the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) was rejected, but its request to join the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB) was approved.

According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs Vijitha Herath, BRICS opted against expanding membership during its recent summit.

Accordingly, the Government will now assess NDB membership with the input from the Ministry of Finance.
