Silverwood out

  • World Cup debacle begets major changes
  • Hasaranga too to step down as T20 Captain

Sri Lanka Head Coach Chris Silverwood will no longer be in his post following the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup as it is likely that his contract will not be renewed after Sri Lanka were ousted in the first round of the tournament.

Meanwhile, skipper Wanindu Hasaranga is allegedly ready to resign after the tournament and current Sri Lanka One-Day International (ODI) Captain Kusal Mendis is likely to replace Hasaranga in the first international T20 assignment for Sri Lanka after the World Cup – the home series against India which will be held in July.

India, though, are likely to send a second-string side for the limited-over formats of the tour.

Senior Indian players such as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are unlikely to feature in both ODI and T20 series in Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, Sanath Jayasuriya is to take major responsibility in the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) international and domestic structures.

Sports Minister Harin Fernando recently said young blood would be infused into the Sri Lanka limited-over sides and the national selectors, headed by Upul Tharanga, are now under pressure to include younger players in both limited-over sides of the country.

Also in the danger zone is Sri Lanka Team Manager Mahinda Halangoda’s position. He may also be left out of his position after the World Cup debacle which Sri Lanka underwent in the US.
