A demonstration was staged yesterday (25) by several trade unions (TUs) opposite the Colombo Fort Railway Station. As a result, the Galle Face entry road was blocked for traffic from the Lotus Street junction.
Earlier yesterday, the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court had issued an order preventing several trade unions from entering certain areas and roads in Colombo Fort. Protesters were prevented from entering the Presidential Secretariat, the President’s residence, the Finance Ministry, the Central Bank, Olcott Mawatha, York Street, Bank Street, Lotus Road, Chatham Street, etc., and also from causing any damage to public property. This order has been issued by the Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage after considering the facts presented by the Colombo Fort Police regarding a planned protest march organised by the Workers’ Struggle Centre of the Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) together with party members of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and several independent trade unions yesterday.
