Following the untimely passing of State Minister Sanath Nishantha, Jagath Priyankara is slated to assume the vacant Member of Parliament seat.

Nishantha, who secured the highest number of votes among Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) candidates in the Puttalam district, tragically lost his life in a car accident on the Katunayake Expressway today (25). His electoral triumph garnered 80,082 votes, placing him as the first runner-up.

However, with Nishantha’s unfortunate demise, Priyankara, the sixth candidate on the SLPP list, is set to fill the void. Priyankara received 40,527 votes during the general election, making him the natural successor.

The SLPP's success in the Puttalam district secured the party five parliamentary seats, with Nishantha initially being one of the triumphant candidates.
