The Public Health Inspectors’ Union of Sri Lanka (PHIUSL) has pointed out that it is important to conduct random Covid-19 tests, including polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests, covering all Medical Officer of Health (MOH) divisions, as the number of asymptomatic Covid-19 cases has increased slightly.
Speaking to the media yesterday (18), PHIUSL President Upul Rohana said: “The number of asymptomatic Covid-19 patients is increasing at present. Many people don’t show symptoms due to receiving the Covid-19 vaccines. In this situation, all that needs to be done is to carry out random Covid-19 tests covering all the MOH divisions.”
He also called for immediate action to reduce the spread of the disease by conducting an analysis of the factors that contribute to the increase in Covid-19 infections.
Meanwhile, Health Ministry Communications Director, Public Health Services Deputy Director General (DDG), and Disaster Preparedness and Response Division Head Dr. Hemantha Herath yesterday commented on recent media reports of various groups visiting tourist areas despite the inter-provincial travel restrictions that are currently in place.
Emphasising that the Ministry cannot be satisfied with the current decline in the number of daily Covid-19 infections, he said that the country would return to its previous state where daily Covid-19 infections and deaths were on the rise due to the irresponsible behaviour exhibited by the people in this manner. Therefore, he urged the people to follow the health guidelines as much as possible and to act responsibly.
According to the Epidemiology Unit, Sri Lanka has, as of 10 a.m. yesterday, recorded 13,484 Covid-19 deaths, while the total number of infections stood at 531,648, of which a total of 492,975 patients have recovered.
