19 Jul 2021

The Colombo Magistrate's Court has refused to grant bail to the owner of a website and its money manager who have been remanded in custody for publishing advertisements of a 15-year-old girl who was allegedly raped. When the complaint was taken before Colombo Additional Magistrate Lochani Abeywickrema today (19), the lawyers representing the two suspects had requested that their clients be released on bail. Officials of the Women and Children's Bureau objected to the request and said that the investigation into the suspects had not been completed and that if they were granted bail, the investigation could be hampered. The police stated in court that granting bail to the suspects could cause a public disturbance. After considering the facts presented, the Magistrate stated that the bail applications were rejected as the investigation into the suspects had not been completed and their release on bail could hamper the investigations. Accordingly, the two suspects were remanded till the 29th of this month. Meanwhile, a three-wheeler driver who was arrested on suspicion of transporting the underage girl for sale was produced before the Colombo Magistrate's Court today. The Children and Women's Bureau said they were opposed to the suspect's release on bail as investigations into the suspect had not been completed. Accordingly, the suspect was remanded till the 29th of this month by the Magistrate.
