Catholic church calls for President’s resignation

04 Apr 2022

BY Buddhika Samaraweera Claiming that the appointment of a new Cabinet of Ministers is not an acceptable solution to the prevailing crisis situation, the Catholic church has emphasised that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, listening to the public opinion, should resign, thereby giving the people the opportunity to appoint a new leader and a Government. Speaking to The Morning, Colombo Archdiocese Social Communications Director Rev. Jude Chrishantha Fernando said: “What the people have been saying is that the current President and the Government should resign. Therefore, the resignation of the Cabinet will not resolve this crisis. If the people say that the President should resign, they must then be given the opportunity to elect a new leader and Government.” He further said that it is a well known fact that the Cabinet is generally functioning under the influence of the President and that therefore, the appointment of a new Cabinet under the same President is not at all an acceptable solution to the crisis. “Most of the time, the Cabinet acts on the decisions of the President. The President has the power to change certain decisions taken by the Cabinet. We have seen many such instances in the past. Therefore, we see the current programme that is being implemented by the Government as an attempt to mislead the people,” claimed Fernando. He also said that the Catholic clergy have organised a protest in Colombo today (5), demanding an immediate solution to the crisis, adding that this is the beginning of another series of programmes to demand the same, including protests. During the past few months, a number of protests were held in various parts of the country to protest against rising commodity prices and the shortages of essential commodities caused by the prevailing economic crisis. As these issues have escalated in recent times, islandwide protests are now taking place demanding the resignation of the President and the Government.
