Ceylon Teachers' Union files FR petition in Supreme Court

The Ceylon Teachers Union has filed a fundamental rights petition before the Supreme Court. It called on the police to use the guidelines issued by the Director General of Health Services to curb the spread of Covid-19 and to rule out violations of fundamental rights by the police. The petition was filed by the President of the Ceylon Teachers Union Priyantha Fernando and its Vice President Habib Mohamed Sameen. The IGP, Minister of Health Pavithra Wanniarachchi, Director General of Health Services and the Attorney General have been named as respondents. Meanwhile, a protest was held in Colombo today (14) against the forced quarantine of a group of teachers' union representatives. The protest was organized by other trade union activists, including members of the teachers' union. Protesters marched in a procession from near the Nelum Pokuna Theater to Kollupitiya via Town Hall, Maradana, Pettah and the Galle face Roundabout.
