Champika ready for chairmanship

04 Sep 2022

Opposition MP, former Power Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka has expressed his willingness to accept the request by Power Minister Kanchana Wijesekera for an Opposition MP, especially Ranawaka, to head a parliamentary committee to probe the country’s fuel and coal procurements. Wijesekera told Parliament last week that he proposed the setting up of a parliamentary committee to inquire into the country’s fuel and coal purchases since there had been many statements from the Opposition that cheaper fuel and coal could be sourced by the country. The Minister further proposed that the respective committee be headed by a member of the Opposition, especially the likes of Ranawaka since he was a former Power Minister. Ranawaka has accepted Wijesekera’s proposal, saying he is prepared to accept the chairmanship of the committee suggested by Wijesekera and further proposed that measures should be taken to conduct an audit into the relevant purchases apart from the ongoing probe by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
