China has offered an additional $ 400,000 worth of food and other humanitarian assistance to Sri Lanka, and has requested Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena to provide a list of the country’s immediate requirements, a press release issued by the Prime Minister’s office said. The humanitarian assistance had been offered to Sri Lanka during a discussion between Gunawardena and the Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Shenhong at Temple Trees last Wednesday (21). While thanking the Ambassador for the assistance provided by China to alleviate the current economic crisis in Sri Lanka, Gunawardena had also stated that the country highly value China’s continuous support. The press release further read that the Chinese Ambassador had expressed his satisfaction over the progress of Sri Lanka’s discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). “As China is also a member of the IMF, the Ambassador assured that the necessary support will be provided in the meeting of the IMF Board of Directors.” The Prime Minister had also made special mention of the Chinese stand in support of Sri Lanka’s sovereignty at the international forums including the United Nations Human Rights Council. The discussion had been initiated with a reference to the historical bilateral relations between the two countries. During the meeting, the importance of further strengthening the existing economic cooperation between China and Sri Lanka in the face of the current economic crisis had also been emphasised. The Prime Minister had further stated that direct private investments, investments in agriculture, renewable energy, irrigation and water supply sectors to provide long-term solutions to economic issues would be welcomed by Sri Lanka.
