26 Jan 2021

By Sumudu Chamara   The Sri Lanka Navy has launched an investigation into the damages caused to a Navy vessel as a result of a collision with an Indian fishing trawler on 18 January in Sri Lankan waters, Navy Spokesperson Captain Indika De Silva, told The Morning. As a result of said collision, the Indian vessel sank and four Indian fishermen went missing. Later, their bodies were found by the Navy during a search and rescue operation. The Navy, on 23 January, handed over the bodies of the four Indian fishermen to the Indian Coast Guard at the International Maritime Boundary Line. However, in the autopsy of the Indian fishermen, it had been revealed that three corpses were of Indian nationals and that the remaining one was of a person with Sri Lankan origin who lived in India, the Navy added. After the legal proceedings initiated by the Magistrate’s Court of Mallakam, the four bodies had been formally handed over to the Consulate General Office of India in Jaffna. On request of the Consulate General Office, the Navy assisted in handing over the four bodies to India, and the bodies were handed over by a Sri Lanka Coast Guard ship to the Indian Coast Guard Ship Atulya.
