Consumer rights political party to be formed

25 Aug 2022

BY Dinitha Rathnayake   Consumer and civil rights activist Asela Sampath said that a political party for consumers and their rights will be formed soon. Speaking to The Morning, he said that they would participate in the next election under the national consumer front in order to fight for consumer rights. “The party would represent mainly the consumers who are going through a crisis at the moment,” he said. Further, he urged the Government to control the price of wheat flour as the selling price of a kilo of flour is around Rs. 350. “The price of a kilo of wheat flour was only Rs. 84 and now it is around Rs. 350. There is no maximum price. Two companies who distribute wheat flour are using the crisis to sell wheat flour at an unreasonable price”. Sampath claimed that the import price of wheat flour per kilo from India is Rs. 200 but that the Sri Lankan market price is Rs. 350. “So, what about the balance Rs. 150? Who is taking it?” Meanwhile, bakers and confectionery makers also want the Government to impose controls on suppliers such as egg farmers due to the current crisis. Speaking to The Morning, the All-Ceylon Bakery Owners’ Association Head N.K. Jayawardena said: “If the Government would intervene and impose measures to control abnormal price increments, it would enable sellers to pass on the benefits to the consumers. Most bakeries are closed due to the economic crisis and those who are left are also struggling to keep the supply and demand due to price increases. Bread is around Rs. 190 a loaf now. Who could buy bread at that price?” The price controls in the recent past have led to shortages and black markets, he added.
