A man and a 19 year old girl jumped into the Mahaweli river yesterday (16). The man had managed to swim ashore, whereas the girl has still not been found, The Morning learns.
Speaking to The Morning, Police spokesperson SSP (Attorney-At-Law) Nihal Thalduwa said that the man has been admitted to a hospital for treatment.
"The man had swum ashore, whereas the girl is still missing. We have not been able to ask details as to why the couple had taken the plunge, but we assume that they were in a romantic relationship. The man is currently receiving treatment at the district hospital and our investigation into the matter will continue, " he said.
He also added that the girl had left home after informing her family that she would be attending a class.
SSP Thalduwa further mentioned that the Sri Lanka police and the Sri Lanka Navy have joined together for a search operation to find the missing girl.
