Court to explain dismissal this week

13 Oct 2019

By Sarah Hannan The Court of Appeal will this week explain the reasons for its decision to reject a writ petition filed against former Defence Secretary and Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa, lawyers said. Activist Gamini Viyangoda said his lawyers had informed him that the Court of Appeal was expected to explain its decision on Tuesday (15). Viyangoda and activist Chandragupta Thenuwara filed a case against Rajapaksa’s citizenship, but the case was dismissed by the Court of Appeal. Viyangoda and Thenuwara had said that they will look to appeal the verdict following perusal of the reasons for the initial dismissal of the case. The two petitioners were confident that they had a valid case against Rajapaksa and his citizenship. The two petitioners who filed a case against the SLPP presidential candidate have claimed they had received death threats and threatening phone calls. They had lodged a complaint at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) over the death threats that had been directed at them online through social media platforms since the dismissal of the petition by the Court of Appeal on 4 October. “We have lodged a complaint at the CID regarding the cyber threats that are directed at us. Furthermore, once we receive the reasons for dismissal of the petition, we will take due action,” Viyangoda told The Sunday Morning.
