Sri Lanka Customs has observed that there has been an increase in recent times of travellers bringing in restricted commodities contained in accompanied and unaccompanied passenger baggage.
Such restricted commodities include gold, cigarettes, medicines, ornamental plants, etc. The importation of these commodities is temporarily suspended due to foreign exchange-related issues prevailing in the country.
In addition, it was also observed that some travellers were bringing in commodities in commercial quantities in violation of the regulations published under the Customs Ordinance and the Imports and Exports (Control) Act.
Customs urged all travellers to refrain from bringing in any prohibited and restricted commodities or temporarily suspended commodities or commodities in commercial quantities contained in the accompanied and unaccompanied baggage through the airports or unaccompanied passenger baggage warehouses, with immediate effect.
The failure to comply with these instructions will result in the forfeiture of all the commodities brought in and the imposition of further forfeitures or penalties in terms of the provisions of the Customs Ordinance and the Imports and Exports (Control) Act.
