SLC sources revealed on Sunday, 27 January that Sri Lanka head coach Chandika Hathurusingha’s role as one of the members of the National Cricket Selection Committee will be in jeopardy as selection committee head Ashantha De Mel has allegedly requested Sports Minister Harin Fernando to strip Hathurusingha of his role as a selector.
Sri Lanka coach automatically becomes part of the selection panel according to Hathurusingh’s contract with SLC.
It was earlier alleged that Hathurusingha wielded his influence to dominate national team selections, up until the recent tour of New Zealand and, as a result, the relations between him and the rest of the members of the selection committee have soured badly.
The rest of the selectors have been overlooked in selecting the final XI, it was also alleged.
Sources hinted Hathurusingha has been advised not to involve in selections during the ongoing Australia Test series and De Mel & Co have resolved to disregard the head Coach in future selections.
