Dengue shows 14% week-on-week decline

During the 30th week of the year in August, 2,198 suspected dengue cases were reported in 23 districts in comparison to 2,560 cases in 24 districts during the previous week. There is a 14.1% decrease in week 30, compared to the previous week. Of all the reported cases, 49.4% were from the Western Province, 4.6% from the Colombo Municipality area, 17.5% from the rest of the Colombo District, 19.7% from the Gampaha District and 7.6% from the Kalutara District. The Districts of Kandy, Kegalle, Ratnapura and Galle have reported a high number of cases, with 12.6%, 7.6%, 6.6%, and 4.1%, respectively. A total of 67 medical officer of health (MOH) areas were flagged as high risk areas during week 30. Out of them, 14 MOH areas showed a rising number of cases in week 30 compared to week 29, and another 48 MOH areas show a persistently high number of cases in both weeks 29 and 30. During week 30, the high risk level of the Mirigama, Agalawatta, Matale, Ukuwela, Matale Municipality, Akmeemana, Induruwa and Embilipitiya MOH areas has come down while the Seeduwa, Kundasale, Matara Municipality, Puttalam, Pelmadulla, Elapatha, Galigamuwa, Rambukkana and Akkaraipattu MOH areas were newly identified as high risk areas. The average midnight total of dengue patients in 73 selected hospitals throughout the country was 922 and 903 during weeks 29 and 30, respectively. In 25 hospitals, the average midnight total has decreased in week 30 when compared with the previous week.
