23 Aug 2022

BY Buddhika Samaraweera   The Colombo Fort Magistrate's Court ordered the release of eight suspects related to the attack on Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) in charge of the Western Province, Deshabandu Tennakoon, on bail, after they pleaded guilty. The suspects were produced before Colombo Fort Chief Magistrate Thilina Gamage yesterday (22), when they pleaded guilty to the charges of attacking SDIG Tennakoon. Taking into account the explanations, the Chief Magistrate ordered that the suspects be released on two personal bails of Rs. 500,000 each. SDIG Tennakoon was attacked by a group of protestors near the Beira Lake in Colombo on 10 May, a day after the attack on public protest sites in front of the Temple Trees, and at the Galle Face Green by a group of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) supporters. Video footage of the incident showed a group of protestors asking SDIG Tennakoon, the latter who was in casual clothes at that time, as to who ordered the attack on the protestors in front of the Temple Trees, and at the Galle Face Green on 9 May. Around 25 protestors had surrounded him at that time and the videos showed SDIG Tennakoon moving forward. When he started moving forward, someone said “attack him”, and one person was seen slapping him. After that, a few of the protestors were seen attacking him. After the incident, the Police had reportedly fired several shots to disperse the crowd, and three suspects were arrested in connection with the incident on the same day, while several other suspects were arrested from time to time.
