  • Urges fellow diaspora members to visit SL and invest
  • Notes PTA and corrupt officials act as barrier to entering country
BY Dinitha Rathnayake   Sri Lankans who have become part of the country’s diaspora community following overseas migration, urged fellow diaspora Sri Lankans to invest in Sri Lanka, and have also started a company for the purpose of enabling the diaspora to make such investments, while urging the authorities to remove obstacles to the same, such as “draconian anti-terror laws”, they stated. Speaking to the media at the official launch of said company, Vasantha Balan from Jaffna said that they had started this company for investors, and that many are willing to come to Sri Lanka.  “This would be a milestone, and we hope that we would be able to help the entire nation to become prosperous.” Jeyaraj Martin from Germany, who also participated in the initiation event, said that Sri Lankans need to help their motherland, which is why they started this business venture. “We are in a crisis. We have an intention to help the country as the diaspora. We actually received a lot of help from the Government and the relevant officers. We started poultry and maize businesses in Vavuniya on a larger scale so we do not have to depend on imports in the future. “Most of the people who migrated had second thoughts about coming to Sri Lanka due to laws like the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act (PTA). There were several hindrances in coming to this country to help due to existing laws, but in the future, we hope that these issues will be resolved.” Responding to a question posed by the media, Balan said that they also urge the Sri Lankan Government to reconsider the PTA. Meanwhile, they also claimed that certain Government officers are taking time to proceed with investment proposals in order to obtain unfair commissions. “So the investors will not proceed with their business ventures because they don't want to waste time, and therefore, the Government should pay attention to this as well,” Balan explained.
