Digital driving licence coming

12 Oct 2022

Cabinet has granted approval to the introduction of a digital driving licence in Sri Lanka, stated Cabinet Spokesperson and Minister of Transport and Highways Bandula Gunawardana. Addressing the weekly Cabinet media briefing last morning (11), he stated that a driving licence containing a Quick Response (QR) code would be introduced in the future, instead of the current one that contains a microprocessor chip. Gunawardana had submitted the proposal to the Cabinet in his capacity as the Minister of Transport and Highways. Cabinet has given instructions to conduct an in-depth study into the matter, and to inform relevant technical and expert committees in this regard. Speaking further, Minister Gunawardana said that the Government expects to resolve the shortage of materials to print driving licences, which was exacerbated by the forex crisis throughout this year. Meanwhile, an extraordinary gazette notification was published, revising the levies charged for the issuance of vehicle driving licences. The communiqué was issued by the Minister on 10 October. As per the statement, the fee charged for an application for a learner’s permit and a new driving licence (for a single class) under the normal service is now Rs. 2,500. Under the one-day service, Rs. 3,500 is charged for the same. Meanwhile, the levy for re-applying for a driving licence written and for the practical test have been revised to Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000, respectively. To renew or extend the validity period of a driving licence, Rs. 2,800 is charged for one period, and an additional levy of Rs. 500 for a lapsed period of one year or less.
