Cabinet approval has been granted for several district base hospitals administered by the Provincial Councils to be upgraded under the Ministry of Health, the government said today (15).
"The Government has planned to upgrade one selected base hospital in each district, providing facilities such as medical treatment, theatres and laboratories which exist at the National Hospital," the government said.
Accordingly, the district base hospitals of Matale, Nawalapitiya, Embilipitiya, Awissawella, Gampaha, Mannar, Vavuniya, Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu governed by the Provincial Councils at present and coming under the category of tertiary health services institutions have been identified to be taken under the purview of the Ministry of Health for enhancing their quality of service supply, equality and the efficiency.
The Cabinet of Ministers has seconded the proposal by the Minister of Health Pavithra Wanniarachchi to establish those district base hospitals under the purview of the Ministry of Health to ensure accomplishment of those objectives.
