29 Mar 2021

The first duty-free store at the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA) in Hambantota was opened last week.  “What we lacked in the Mattala airport was several duty-free stores,” State Minister of Aviation and Export Zones Development D.V. Chanaka stated during the opening ceremony. Moreover, the State Minister also highlighted that essential facilities similar to those in the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) located in Katunayake are to be established at the MRIA within the following three weeks.  He further added that both the departure and arrival terminals would be improved to match BIA standards. Furthermore, he stated that the MRIA aims to establish these facilities ideally before the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.  “In addition, within the next two weeks, all the facilities that are in the BIA in Katunayake will be established in the Mattala airport as well,” Chanaka revealed.  “These initiations will be started within the next two weeks; all the facilities will be given to tourists as well as Sri Lankans before the Sinhala and Tamil New Year,” Chanaka commented.
