Exam-centric education system must change: Education Minister

03 Oct 2022

Minister of Education Dr. Susil Premajayantha stated that the existing exam-centric education system should be changed through a transformation process that goes beyond education reforms, adding that he is making great efforts to make such a transformation. Speaking at an event, he said: “Universities should be fully innovated and updated technologically so that courses can be a haven for universal knowledge. This transformative change should take place from preschool to the school. Especially in preschool, the wider the space for curious observation, the wider the opportunity for children to engage in exploratory learning by asking questions and pursuing sources of knowledge in school.” He said that another training should be given to engage in a profession after receiving many degrees in Sri Lanka, adding that education should be directed towards graduate courses with professional skills so that graduates can engage in a profession just after they leave the university. He also mentioned that it is not possible to stop the protests in the country due to unemployment until such an education system is prepared. “I am working hard to free the children from the oppressive mental distress of having to remember the subject knowledge for years and face the exams. The existing exam-centric education system should be changed through an education transformation that goes beyond the education reforms. Towards that end, the Ministry will support the rapid promotion of the mathematics subject, on which many subjects depend. My aim is to give the children of the country many things that I did not get,” said Dr. Premajayantha.  Following requests from various quarters, the Education Ministry is currently focused on bringing educational reforms, and as a step towards that, Premajayantha told the Parliament recently that term tests for students from grade one to five would be scrapped in the forthcoming educational policy. He said that students in the said grades would be subject to continuous assessment through modules instead of term tests, adding that burden on students due to examinations would be alleviated through the proposed educational policies.
