By Dinitha RathnayakeThe Criminal Investigation Department (CID) together with the US Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and the Australian Federal Police are currently conducting an international probe into the Easter Sunday terror attacks, Public Security Minister Sarath Weersekera claimed in Parliament yesterday (19).The Minister of Public Security, who earlier stated that Naufer Moulavi is the mastermind behind the attack, added that the FBI too has identified Moulavi as the mastermind and that the institution he was working for has also been confirmed.“Even the FBI has confirmed that Naufer Moulavi was the main character in the attacks,” he said.Making a special statement, he added that time is taken for these kinds of investigations, as the wrongdoers cannot be allowed to escape through the loopholes.“Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who has been found to be the mastermind behind the 11 September 2001 attacks, is yet to be tried, while it took a few years for India to take action against the killers of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. It took three years to file legal action against the killers of late Minister, President’s Counsel (PC) Lakshman Kadirgamer, and to take legal action against the Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth Relic) attackers.”He also claimed that information has come to light that several foreigners were involved in the Easter Sunday terror attacks and that an Australian national of Sri Lankan origin, Lukman Thalib, has already been arrested in Qatar. Weerasekera revealed that there is information that four Maldivian nationals were also involved in this terror attack.Minister Weerasekera made a special statement in the House and responded to remarks made by outgoing Attorney General (AG) Dappula de Livera PC that the CID investigations into the Easter Sunday bombings are not completed, saying that these kinds of investigations take time.Following this statement made by the AG, the Minister instructed the CID to submit a report in this regard.However, according to Weerasekera, nine cases have been filed against 32 suspects so far and necessary steps will be taken to file cases against the other suspects as well.
