  • Indian dhal, Australian white sugar to stabilise local prices

By Yumiko Perera   The prices of bakery goods would not be increased despite the fluctuating sugar prices, according to the All Ceylon Bakery Owners Association (ACBOA), The Sunday Morning learnt.  Speaking to The Sunday Morning, ACBOA President N.K. Jayawardena said: "The prices of bakery products would not be increased for the time being."  Noting that they are expecting the price of sugar to stabilise soon, as the bakery owners are already struggling to keep their heads above water, Jayawardena further mentioned that they hope that the Government will come up with a solution to this matter promptly.  The Government recently decided to import dhal and white sugar with the mediation of Lanka Sathosa and co-operative movements, as a measure to stabilise the constantly fluctuating prices.  According to the Government Information Department, dhal and white sugar are marked at higher prices in the local market, and therefore, the Cabinet had approved a proposal tabled by the Trade Minister Bandula Gunawardana to import the aforementioned products from India and Australia, The Sunday Morning learnt.  Several attempts to contact Gunawardana for more insight in this regard, proved futile.
