Foul play between Litro and the Govt. claims Harin

02 Dec 2021

Foul play has taken place between the Litro LP Gas company and the Government, in order to sell off the company which will benefit the Government in return, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Harin Fernando alleged in Parliament today (02). "Recently, it was exposed that the Litro gas company had done a valuation of their company and assets. This was surely done so that it can be sold off and the demand for LP gas can reduce with the excuse that the Gas cylinders are not safe. We can see people are looking for alternatives such as firewood and electric cookers, thus the demand for LP gas reduces and in return the Government has a small chance to reduce costs in purchasing LP gas," said Fernando. He added that it was a well known fact that the Litro Gas company was a profitable company, and having a valuation done in haste was all part of a foul plot. "The Litro company selling their company is fine, but sacrificing the innocent lives of the people of Sri Lanka is unfair. Everyone is talking in technical terms, whereas the fact that they are playing with the lives of innocent people is sad. You don't see gas cylinders suddenly exploding in other parts of the world. Like I always say, for the Government that used the Easter attacks for their benefit, exploding a few gas cylinders is not a big task," he said. During his speech, Fernando explained that when LP Gas is imported to Sri Lanka, the proportion of Propane to Butane is always tested in both the exporting country as well as the importing country. "If the LP gas is tested prior to arriving into Sri Lanka, and if it is also protocol that it is tested in Sri Lanka prior to distribution, it is very unusual that the proportion has been tampered with. Now, the Government MPs along with the Litro Gas company are blaming the Gas cylinder regulators. These are just excuses to cover up the ploy," Fernando further mentioned. Additionally, Fernando revealed that the cost of Propane gas was USD40 higher than butane, adding that if the ratio of propane has been increased, there has been financial fraud as well. "Sri Lanka is a country that does not have money now. We do not even have foreign exchange reserves. So, if we have paid extra for the ratio of Propane to be increased, there is definitely some foul play there too," he concluded.
