16 May 2022

By Buddhika Samaraweera A total of four suspects have been arrested in connection with the death of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Parliamentarian Amarakeerthi Athukorala, who was killed during a tense situation in the Nittambuwa which erupted following a group of SLPP supporters attacked two peaceful protests in Colombo. When contacted by The Morning, Police Media Spokesman, Senior Superintendent of Police and Attorney-at-Law Nihal Thalduwa stated that four suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident. He added that investigations are underway to find other suspects involved in the incident. Unrests erupted across the country on 9 May when a group of SLPP supporters, who, following a meeting with former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees that day, attacked peaceful protesters at “Myna/MainaGoGama” in front of Temple Trees and “GotaGoGama” at the Galle Face Green. During such a tense situation in the Nittambuwa area, Athukorala had travelled through the area in his vehicle. A group of people surrounded the vehicle of Athukorala when it was passing Nittambuwa and the security officers of the slain MP had opened fire at the people at that time. Due to the shooting a 27-year-old youth had been killed while some others had sustained injuries. The closed circuit television footage showed MP Athukorala and his security officer, the latter who was holding a pistol, running away from the scene after the shooting and they were found dead in a nearby building on the same day. It was initially reported that the MP had shot himself dead after being surrounded by the people. However, the post-mortem examination conducted by Dr. Ramesh Alagiyawanna, the Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) of the Wathupitiwala Hospital, had later revealed that the death was due to multiple injuries including fractures and internal bleeding.
