Four Malabe cops arrested over phone, chain theft

BY Buddhika Samaraweera   Four officers attached to the Malabe Police Station have been arrested by the Kottawa Police in connection with an incident of stealing a gold chain and a mobile phone from a youth at the Vidyala Junction in Kottawa on 20 August, and the Superintendent of Police (SP) in charge of the Nugegoda Police Division has interdicted the suspects. The Police Media Division (PMD) told The Morning that the arrested officers include a Police Sergeant, and three Police Constables (PCs), including one attached to the Special Police Bureau of the Malabe Police. According to the PMD, the victim, a youth from Weeraketiya, had visited his sister’s residence located near the Vidyala Junction in Kottawa on 20 August, and had been waiting on the road in front of the house. At that time, the suspects had approached him in a three wheeler under the guise of asking for the whereabouts of a certain road, at which point they had robbed the youth's gold chain and smartphone. Following a complaint lodged by the victim, the Kottawa Police has commenced an investigation into the incident during which the Police have recovered the stolen gold chain, the mobile phone, and also the three-wheeler which was identified as belonging to a PC attached to the Malabe Police Station, which the suspects used to commit the crime. The PMD stated that the SP in charge of the Nugegoda Police Division has taken steps to interdict the suspects from the Police service following their arrest. The arrested suspects were to be produced before the Homagama Magistrate’s Court yesterday (23) evening.
