Fuel distribution to recommence today

16 May 2022

  • New diesel shipment arrives from India
The Ceylon Petroleum Storage Terminals Limited (CPSTL) will recommence fuel distribution duties today (16) after it halted operations yesterday (15) due to the Vesak Poya holiday.  “We are closed today, after a long period of time, due to Vesak. We are resuming distribution early tomorrow morning,” officials at the CPSTL told The Morning yesterday.  Meanwhile, a new shipment of diesel from India, supplied under the line of credit for fuel, arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday (15). The Indian High Commission in Colombo announced the latest delivery of fuel shipment in its official Twitter handle. This diesel shipment brings the total fuel shipments delivered by India to 12, a volume of more than 400,000 metric tonnes of fuel.  Fuel lines are reported from every district in the country, as the public grapples with the heavy fuel shortage in the country. Furthermore, fuel is distributed in limited supplies to consumers, leaving those that depend on it for a living such as three wheel drivers, heavily inconvenienced.  Meanwhile, three ships, carrying crude oil, furnace oil and petrol shipments, are waiting near Sri Lankan waters for the Government to clear the funds necessary to release them. Officials had noted that these shipments may be stuck until June, as the Government is in a deep forex crisis.  Officials from the Treasury Department have reportedly stated that there is about $ 300 million remaining from the two Indian Line of Credits for fuel imports.
