G L Peiris remains tight-lipped on the complete implementation of the 13th amendment

07 Oct 2021

In response to Indian Foreign Secretary Shri Harsh Shringla's request for the complete implementation of the 13th amendment to the constitution, Foreign Minister Prof. G L Peiris remained silent on the subject, preferring to speak to the media about the financial assistance extended in connection with Shringla's visit. These statements were made during a media brief held yesterday (06).   "India is ready to direct large-scale investments towards Sri Lanka. India has identified pharmaceutical production and IT sectors as attractive sectors for investments to be made in Sri Lanka to assist our post-pandemic economic recovery," said Prof. Peiris   Additionally, he stated that special attention was also drawn towards alternatives, where the Indian Government had discussed with its central bank to help buttress Sri Lanka's foreign reserves.   Meanwhile, Prof. Peiris dismissed rumours about "special attention" which was drawn during the discussion with Shringla.   "There was no special attention drawn towards the oil tank farms in Trincomalee. There are pre-existing agreements regarding the oil tank farm, but most are unaware of it. The opinion which claims India is influencing this heavily is false. The Foreign secretary did not exert such an influence either. Shringla and the Indian Government is of the stance that this matter must be discussed in a way which benefits both nations and helps to realise the ambitions of both countries. Before a decision is made, discussions will take place," said Prof. Peiris   In concluding, Prof. Peiris clarified that a final decision will only be reached once all stakeholders, including Trade Unions are consulted.
