Get tested, Health Ministry tells symptomatic long weekend travellers

19 Jan 2022

BY Buddhika Samaraweera Taking into account the passage of the long vacation from 14 to 17 January, the Health Ministry has requested that those who have any symptoms of Covid-19 be referred for a Covid-19 test immediately. Addressing a media briefing held yesterday (18), Health Ministry Communications Director, Public Health Services Deputy Director General, and Disaster Preparedness and Response Division Head Dr. Hemantha Herath said that due to the long vacation, many people had visited various places or gone to places where people gather. “A large number of people have visited various places during the long vacation period. Usually, there may be an increase in the number of Covid-19 infections after such a situation. Therefore, everyone should be careful to control such an increase. It is important that anyone who has even the slightest symptom of Covid-19 undergoes a Covid-19 test in order to prevent an increase of Covid-19 patients,” he said. Dr. Herath also pointed out that in the event of a family member or other close associate testing positive for Covid-19, it is very important that those who have worked closely with them be tested for Covid-19. He said that anyone with symptoms, whether they travelled or not, should be tested. “If anyone has a prolonged fever, it could be a symptom of dengue too. Everyone should therefore be vigilant about that as well,” noted Dr. Herath. According to the Epidemiology Unit, Sri Lanka, as of 6.40 a.m. yesterday (18), has recorded 15,231 Covid-19 deaths while the total number of infections stood at 597,707, of which a total of 568,506 patients have recovered.
