06 May 2021

  • Lament presence of non-Govt. Party leaders at such meetings

By Dinitha Rathnayake   Certain Party Leaders of the ruling Sri Lanka Nidhahas Podujana Sandhanaya (Sri Lanka People’s Freedom Alliance) Government have boycotted the Government Party Leaders meeting for the second time. National Freedom Front Leader and Minister Wimal Weerawansa, Democratic Left Front Leader and Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Pivithuru Hela Urumaya Leader and Minister Udaya Gammanpila, and Lanka Sama Samaja Party Leader MP Prof. Tissa Vitharana did not attend the most recent Government Party Leaders’ discussion convened at the Temple Trees. Speaking to The Morning, Gammanpila said: “This was supposed to be a Government Party Leaders’ meeting. We expect only 20 members for this meeting. Only Government Party Leaders should attend this, not anyone else. During this meeting, and the one before that, we learnt that around 50 people were there to participate in the Government Party Leaders’ meeting." According to Gammanpila, several Government Party Leaders had not agreed with this, and had informed Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa at a private meeting about their absence. "Premier Rajapaksa agreed with us and scheduled a Government Party Leaders meeting for 11 May, which is only for Government Party Leaders." The discussion will be about the Provincial Council elections and the electoral system. However, Sri Lanka Freedom Party Chairman MP Maithripala Sirisena, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organiser Basil Rajapaksa, SLPP Chairman and Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris, Mahajana Eksath Peramuna Leader and Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, and many other Party Leaders of the Sri Lanka People’s Freedom Alliance participated at the last Government Party Leaders’ meeting held at Temple Trees.
