By Buddhika Samaraweera The Department of Examinations has made arrangements to hold the Grade Five Scholarship examination for 2021 on 22 January 2022 and the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level (A/L) examination from 7 February to 5 March, according to the department. A total of 340,508 candidates are scheduled to sit for the Grade Five Scholarship examination, while 345,242 candidates will be sitting for the A/L examination.  The Scholarship examination will be held at 2,943 examination centres islandwide. The A/L examination will be held at 2,438 examination centres islandwide and 279,141 school candidates will appear for the examination. In addition, 66,101 private candidates have also applied for the A/L examination. The Education Ministry, on 2 November 2021, announced the revised dates for the Grade Five Scholarship, A/L, and GCE Ordinary Level (O/L) examinations for 2021. However, there have been requests from various parties to postpone the said examinations further, taking into account the fact that relevant syllabi have not been covered due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation.  Commenting on such requests to The Morning recently, Education Ministry Secretary Prof. Kapila Perera said: “Currently, the Education Ministry is of the view that these examinations could be held on the previously announced dates. We do not see any need to postpone the examinations. All these are decisions that have been discussed at length before.” He said that the A/L and Scholarship examinations are usually held in the month of August and therefore, only two school terms would be covered for the students who are sitting for the examinations. Accordingly, from August 2021 to February this year, students have ample time to complete their studies, he said. Speaking further, he said: “The Education Ministry has no problem with postponing the examinations, but we all should pay attention to the social situation that arises through it. There are a large number of students, especially those who want the examinations to be postponed as well as those who request that the examinations be held on the due date.”
