29 May 2021

The Health Ministry is looking at appointing a technical committee to study the possibility of administering the Russian manufactured anti-Covid 19 vaccine, Sputnik V first dose as the second dose of Covishield AstraZeneca vaccine, The Morning learnt. Senior Consultant Paediatrician and President of the Association of Medical Specialists, Dr. Lakkumar Fernando told The Morning that it has been recommended to the Health Ministry to appoint a technical committee to study the possibility of mixing the two vaccine doses. “The Advisory Committee on Communicable Disease has advised the Director General of Health Services Dr Asela Gunawardena to appoint a small technical committee to look into the possibility of mixing and matching Sputnik V and AstraZeneca anti-Covid 19 vaccines, in the event that AZ stocks for the second dose are not procured before the protection given by the first AZ dose lapses,” he said. There are currently over 600,000 individuals who have been administered with the 1st dose of AstraZeneca and are awaiting the second dose. Due to the unavailability of AstraZeneca vaccines to administer as a second dose, the option of mixing and matching vaccines is to be looked at.
