Highways Ministry top officials asked to leave

10 Jan 2022

Chief Government Whip and Highways Minister Johnston Fernando has directed the chairpersons and board members of a number of institutions under his Ministry to resign as soon as possible, The Morning learns. This order will require officials from the Road Development Authority (RDA) – along with current RDA Chairman Chaminda Athaluwage – and three other institutions, including the “Maga Neguma” Road Construction Equipment Company – which is also chaired by Athaluwage – to step down. Minister Fernando had repeatedly assured the public that road construction projects would continue despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, having declared open a series of development projects including the “Golden Gate Kalyani” bridge and promising further developments, such as the second phase of the Central Expressway scheduled to be complete by 15 January, while also lambasting Opposition MPs for criticising the Government. It is thus unknown at this time as to why such an upheaval is taking place at the Highways Ministry.
