24 Sep 2020

By Maheesha Mudugamuwa Steps are being taken by the Government to use high-tech methods in a bid to find a scientific solution to the human-elephant conflict that has plagued the people of the country for a long time, according to the State Ministry of Skills Development, Vocational Education, Research, and Innovation. Accordingly, the high-tech methods such as high-efficiency hanging fence that cannot be destroyed by elephants, a collar system that provides special signals, and the use of drone technology has been discussed recently at a meeting held between the State Ministry of Skills Development, Vocational Education, Research, and Innovation and the State Ministry of Wildlife and Forest Conservation. The pilot project for the usage of a collar system, where a collar providing signals would be worn by wild elephants, has already been conducted in Udawalawa and Amapara. A successful drone technology application has also been developed with the assistance of the Department of Railways to prevent collisions with wild elephants. The Industrial Technology Institute of Sri Lanka is implementing a communication-based project to ensure the safety of the community from wild elephant attacks. Speaking at the meeting, State Minister Dr. Seetha Arambepola said it would be easier for her State Ministry, the State Ministry of Wildlife, the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC), the Forest Department, and the Irrigation Department to work together to resolve this issue. She also pointed out that a mechanism should be set up expeditiously to identify areas that should be given priority to in finding solutions to this social problem and also to implement pilot projects.
