I did not ask the public to stop eating fish: Dr. Shehan De Silva

04 Jun 2021

Specialist at the Colombo South Teaching Hospital Dr. Shehan Silva has rejected the statements posted on social media claiming that he had advised the public not to consume fish following the X-Press Pearl crisis. A statement supposedly issued by Dr. Shehan Silva, a specialist at the Kalubowila General Hospital, stating that a large number of people who consumed fish have been hospitalized due to allergies is circulating on social media at the moment. Responding to this, Dr. Silva said, "There is a message circulating saying that I have told people not to eat fish due to the prevailing conditions. I have not said anything of the sort. Of course, the harm caused by the sunken ship may bear a toxic effect upon not only our diet but also to the environment as well. People should be vigilant about the repercussions. I am no expert on the toxicological impact of this and I have not personally assessed it."
