By Buddhika Samaraweera The Illegal Assets and Property Investigation Division, a newly added division to the Sri Lanka Police, has so far banned property worth over Rs. 780 million, and is investigating more than 1,100 individuals for illegally acquiring assets and properties. Speaking to the media yesterday (6), Senior Police Spokesman Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) Ajith Rohana said: “Investigations are currently being carried out on more than 1,100 persons on charges of illegal acquisition of assets and property, out of which about 21 suspects have been arrested so far. In addition, property worth over Rs. 780 million belonging to such individuals has been frozen following investigations.” He added that among the above investigations were about 325 investigations into the acquisition of assets and property through drug trafficking. He also said that after the completion of the investigation, action would be taken against the suspects and their assets and property under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. “One of the most important new divisions among the police divisions is the Illegal Assets and Property Investigation Division. Those who have been subjected to such allegations will be investigated at length and appropriate action will be taken in the future too,” said SDIG Rohana. The said police unit was set up under the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in June 2020. It is the responsibility of the division to deal with the full-time confiscation of immovable and movable property and money earned through various rackets and narcotics under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
