Imported milk powder price hike not made by importers

BY Dinitha Rathnayake The Milk Powder Importers’ Association has NMSJ cites grounds of accountability, economic destruction    stated that milk powder importers are increasing the price of milk powder according to their own wishes, and that the current price increase has not been decided by the Association. Association Spokesman Asoka Bandara told The Morning yesterday (16) that it has not yet decided to increase the price of milk powder, and therefore advised importers not to increase the price of stocks that have already been imported. He also said that he would be able to comment on the price increase on Thursday (19).  The cost of a 400 g packet of milk powder is Rs. 790. However, milk powder companies have taken steps to increase the price of imported milk powder and infant milk powder, according to reports. Steps have been taken to increase the price of a 1 kg packet of milk powder by Rs. 600 and a 400 g packet by Rs. 230. Accordingly, the price of a 1 kg packet of milk powder has been increased to Rs. 2,545 and the price of a 400 g packet of milk powder has been increased to Rs. 1,020. Meanwhile, it is reported that a 400 g packet of infant milk powder has been increased by nearly Rs. 1,000. The price hikes have been attributed to the depreciation of the Sri Lankan rupee against the US dollar.  It is learned that certain importers who have unsold stocks are selling the milk powder at new and increased prices.
