India’s Amul eyes Sri Lankan market

11 Oct 2022

Indian state Government co-operative dairy society, Amul, is eyeing Sri Lankan markets to cater its dairy products.  Indian Union Minister of Home Affairs and Co-operation Amit Shah on Sunday (9) said that Amul will be merged with five other co-operative societies to form a multi-state co-operative society (MSCS).  The process for the merger has already begun, said Shah, adding that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Government is prioritising natural and digital agriculture for the certification of natural products, according to the news agency PTI “We have a huge opportunity to deliver milk to countries like Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, and to explore this world market, the [Indian] Government is setting up a multi-state co-operative, which will act as the export house,” he had said.  He said that the MSCS will ensure the export of the products after its certification so that profits can go directly into the bank accounts of farmers. The Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd. markets its products under the Amul brand, as per PTI reports.  Earlier last Friday (7), while speaking at the North-Eastern Co-operative Dairy Conclave in Gangtok, Shah emphasised the need to double milk production in the country over the next five years, not just to meet the demand in the domestic market, but also those of neighbouring countries. He also asserted that the Indian economy is currently ranked fifth in the world and financial discipline by the North-Eastern states is necessary to contribute to making it second in the world, ANI reported.
