29 Jun 2021

The Military and the Criminal Investigations Department have conducted investigations with regard to the presence of camouflage-clad foreign personnel at the Chinese Joint Venture to dredge and clean up the ancient Tissamaharama Wewa. Cabinet Spokesperson Keheliya Rambukwella speaking to reporters on Tuesday (29) said the investigations have made it clear that there is no issue in wearing such attire in the country. He noted that the findings of the investigations highlight that such allegations of Chinese Military personnel present in the country are “baseless”. ‘These are uniforms ,’ said the Minister adding any registered security firm can forward for approval their desire uniform. The CID and the Military Intelligence have told us that there is no issue in wearing camouflage clothing. ‘The investigation reports term the attire as overalls,’ he said adding that they are worn by workers at many garages in Colombo. Recently, a Chinese Joint Venture (JV) to dredge and clean up the ‘Tissamaharama Wewa’ commenced and it led to serious controversy following the presence of camouflage-clad personnel at the site. The uniforms worn by Chinese personnel were similar to that worn by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army.
